The Facts

Baylor University is a rather large, private institution located in the town of Waco, Texas, and is affiliated with the Southern Baptist church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 15,000 students, however, the university's School of Law is significantly smaller, and is home to about 426 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 22, and it is relatively common for students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its use of the Socratic method of teaching, for its emphasis on the practical application of theory in the real legal world, as well as for its abundant and extensive research resources. The school offers degrees in the JD, and the LLM, as well as joint degrees in the JD/MBA, the JD/M taxation, as well as the JD/MPPA, all of which are usually 4 year programs. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of business litigation, business transactions, estate planning, administrative practice, civil procedure, as well as criminal law.

Admission to Baylor University's School of Law is quite competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 2,373 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 300 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 63 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 159 to 164, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.9. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and can take advantage of the school's early application program if they so choose.

The university's school of law has 32 faculty members, and students agree that the faculty is the best asset of the program. The professors are always available to talk to students and offer assistance and guidance. They also have a huge amount of professional experience, and consequently have a lot of practical advice to give. The school has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at Baylor's School of Law don't seem too anxious about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 97% of the most recent graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $72,346. Students are most frequently hired by firms such as Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld LLP, Jenkins and Gilcrest, Thompson and Knight, Strasburger and Price, Baker and Botts, Haynes and Boone, Bracewell and Patterson, Jackson Walker, Fulbright and Jaworski, Andrews and Kurth, as well as Winstead Sechrest.
