The Facts

Nova Southeastern University is a rather large, private institution located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 22,000 students. The university's Shephard Broad School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 963 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 24, and it is fairly rare for any students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its technological capabilities, its excellent research resources, as well as for its emphasis on practical skills through participation in clinical law services. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as combined degrees in the 4 year JD/MBA in business administration, the 4 year JD/MS in psychology, the 4 year JD/MS in dispute resolution, the 4 year JD/MS in computer technology, as well as the 4 year JD/MURP. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of civil procedure, commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, government services, human rights law, intellectual property law, international law, labor law, legal history, property, as well as taxation.

Admission to Nova Southeastern University's Shephard Broad School of Law is quite competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 2,900 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 746 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 360 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 147 to 152, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.0. Students are notified of their admissions status by the beginning of the months of March, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The Broad School of Law has 116 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their accessibility and willingness to help students, saying that they always are there to answer questions, or just to have a chat. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 15:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the Broad School of Law often complain about the school's connections within the professional community, saying that the career services are less than capable of doing their job, however, over 83% of the most recently graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $53,270. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as various private and national law firms, local and state governmental agencies, the state attorney's office, various national governmental agencies, as well as state public defender's offices.
