The Facts

Yeshiva University is a rather large, private institution located in the Bronx, New York, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 24,000 students. The university's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 724 graduate medical students. The average age of enrollment is around 23, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its fantastic research facilities and programs, as well as for its emphasis on the biomedical sciences. Aside from the basic MD degree, the school offers a combined MD/PhD degree in the areas of anatomy, biophysics, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecularly biology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, as well as physiology.

Admission to Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine is extremely competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 5,943 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 520 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 180 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had average MCAT scores of about 10.6 in Biology, 10.5 in Physics, and 9.4 in Verbal, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.6. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and are able to take advantage of the school's early application program if they so choose.

The Einstein College of Medicine has about 3,510 faculty members, all of whom come from relatively diverse medical and academic backgrounds. The school also boasts a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 1:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Graduates of the Einstein College of Medicine often go on to be accepted to some of the most competitive and prestigious residency programs in the nation, and most frequently specialize in the areas of internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, ob/gyn, emergency medicine, psychiatry, family practice, as well as ophthalmology.

Clinical Programs

Students are required to complete extensive clinical training, including 11 weeks of medicine, 7 weeks of pediatrics, 6 weeks of psychiatry, 6 weeks of ob/gyn, 8 weeks of surgery, 6 weeks of family medicine, 2 weeks of geriatrics, as well as 2 weeks of neurology. Students complete their clinical clerkships at affiliated facilities including Jacobi Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Beth Israel Medical Center, as well as the Bronx-Lebanon Medical Center.

What's Good

"There are a lot of opportunities for patient contact, which really helps to put a human face on all the terminology."

"The faculty here are incredibly dedicated to their students and to the school itself."

"Students here are actually very supportive of one another, which is nice."

What's Bad

"There is never enough on campus graduate housing available, and it can be hard to find stuff off campus."

"There are some faculty members who give out an unreasonable amount of work."

"Tuition is extremely high, and the school doesn't seem to keen on giving out financial aid."
