The Facts
Saint Louis University is a rather moderately sized, private university affiliated with the Catholic church located in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri, and is home to over 6,340 undergraduate students and approximately 4,125 graduate and part-time professional students. The university is actually made up of several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of the arts and sciences, business, allied health professions, engineering and aviation, nursing, philosophy and letters, professional studies, public services, as well as social service. The school is perhaps best known for its preprofessional programs in areas such as aerospace, and even mathematical computer science. The school offers its students many majors in a wide variety of areas, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of biology, psychology, nursing, communications, as well as marketing
Admission to Saint Louis University is quite competitive, and the applicant pool gets larger and larger with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 6,400 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 4,500 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 1,377 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1090 to 1310, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 23 to 29. Additionally, more than 63% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.6.
Saint Louis University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 12:1, and students say that their professors are probably the best quality of the school. Students say that they feel as though their professors truly care about them, and make a big effort to be as accessible as possible literally 24-7. There are tons of great research opportunities at the school which give students opportunities to work one on one with their professors and establish long-lasting connections that often result in careers.
The Social Scene
The city of St. Louis offers students plenty of entertainment opportunities including great and student friendly bars, clubs, shops, cafes, museums, performances, and restaurants. Most students say that you don’t really need a car, as the St. Louis public transit system is affordable and pretty efficient, although the students that do own cars often take weekend road trips to go camping, and we hear it’s pretty easy to hitch a ride.
There are a fair number of fraternities and sororities at the school, and the Greeks pretty much dictate the on campus social life. Although the administration has recently cracked down on heavy partying, it hasn’t seemed to deter the students from having their weekend fun. Drinking is usually quite popular, but not to the extent of most largish universities.
The dating scene is quite good, and we hear that there are some very...ahem...attractive specimens to be found here...
What’s Good
“The professors here are incredible, and you get the sense that they really care about you in many ways.”
“The administration is actually totally willing to talk to you about any problems you have, and you can actually talk to a real human being.”
“The people here are so friendly, and you really feel like you are a part of a real community.”
What’s Bad
“There are a lot of annoying, conservative frat boys here, and it feels like you never meet a guy different than that description.”
“The neighborhoods surrounding the campus aren’t really very safe, and it isn’t a good idea to walk around at night, especially alone.”
“The party scene here can be really obnoxious, and sometimes it becomes quite impossible to do your work on the weekends.”
