University of Nebraska, Lincoln Application
The Facts
The University of Nebraska is a large state school located in the town of Lincoln, Nebraska. The university is home to over 17,000 undergraduate students and about 5,000 graduate students. The university is made up of several smaller undergraduate colleges includes schools of agricultural sciences and natural resources,
architecture, arts and sciences, engineering and technology, fine and performing arts, journalism and mass communication, and education. The agriculture department is pretty hard-core; the school houses a huge tractor-testing institute where hundreds of new breeds are tested every year. The school offers about 27 majors to undergraduate students with a particular emphasis on pre-professional studies. Some of the most popular majors with students include majors in business administration, psychology, biological sciences, management, and English. The university also offers a lauded program in meteorology and climatology, as well as an Individualized Program where students are allowed to build their own majors.
Admissions standards are pretty par for the course; last year, about 7,375 students applied and approximately 5,586 were admitted. Eventually, about 3,679 of those admitted actually enrolled for the
coming fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1040 to 1310 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 27. Over 53% of the admitted students were
ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class.
The university has a less than intimate student to teacher ratio of 16:1, and students say that like most state schools, introductory classes are enormous, and students feel quite anonymous. However, the upper level classes tend to be quite a bit smaller, and most teachers make themselves quite available during their office hours. An interesting note: the university just recently changed to a grading system including pluses and minuses. The question is; is that a good thing or a bad thing? Hmmm....
The Social Scene
The town of Lincoln is flat as a pancake, and is surrounded by miles upon miles of cornfields. Yes, perhaps the scenery might be fairly monotonous, but the students say the town of Lincoln has plenty of fun bars, cafes, shops and movie theaters to keep them entertained during their free time. There is definitely a big Greek scene at U of Nebraska; drinking is always a popular pastime, and the university has a pretty lax policy when it comes to party-busting, which is kind of odd considering the campus is officially dry...
Sports are definitely a big draw at the school; the Huskers football team has done quite well in recent years, and students love to come to the stadium to cheer their favorite team on. Tailgate parties are also a very popular activity and students love to grill burgers and hot dogs in the back of their truck. The dating scene is worth checking out; we hear the guys and girls are corn-fed and farm-raised; expect lots of purebred American beauties...
What’s Good
“The school is really well-kept. The buildings are constantly being renovated to keep in top shape.”
“The people here are really genuine. It’s hard to find anyone here that strikes you as not meaning what they say.”
“The academics, also in large classes, are really amazing. It’s a great deal for the low price of admission.”
What’s Bad
“The dorms are pretty ghetto and pretty overcrowded. There’s barely an ounce of living space.”
“The classes are huge. I can just fall asleep and no one will even notice.”
“Nebraska is so boring. Everything is flat and covered in corn fields.”
