University of Southern Indiana Application

The Facts

The University of Southern Indiana is a rather moderately sized, public institution located in the town of Evansville, Indiana, and is home to over 7,200 undergraduate students and approximately 3,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s 5 undergraduate schools or 1 graduate school, which offer academic programs in the areas of business, education, human service, the liberal arts, nursing and health professions, as well as science and engineering. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, (home to a unique program in biophysics) business, (a popular program that has majors as diverse as business economics and retailing) communications and the arts, (which has a terrific program in broadcasting) computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, (which only has the major of engineering available) health professions, as well as the social sciences. The University of Southern Indiana offers its students a fairly wide variety of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of math, German language, business administration, education, as well as nursing.

Admission to the University of Southern Indiana is not particularly competitive, however, the overall number of qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 4,370 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 4,050 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 2,080 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming Fall semester. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1050, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 25. Additionally, more than 42% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.

The University of Southern Indiana has a student to faculty ratio of 25:1, which isn’t particularly wonderful; there are many other schools of comparable, or even larger size that manage to keep their number much lower. There are quite a few lecture courses, however, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar class where students have the opportunity to discuss the content of previous lectures.

The Social Scene

The town of Evansville is quite suburban, and family oriented, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment. Fortunately however, the larger city of Indianapolis is about a 2 hours drive away, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of its more lucrative social and cultural offerings. The school is home to 10 national fraternities and sororities, which are quite popular with students. The Greeks basically govern on campus social life, and their weekend parties are often the highlights of the social calendar. Drinking is definitely the most popular mode of social interaction at these get-togethers, and the administration seems to turn a fairly blind eye.

The dating scene is quite diverse, and the students are eager to mingle and meet new people; your chances are looking pretty good...

What’s Good

“The professors here are wonderful, and even though they have to deal with large classes sometimes, they manage to make it very interesting.”

“The party scene here is awesome. The weekends are full of party hopping.”

“The people here are really laid-back, and don’t feel the need to compete with each other all the time.”

What’s Bad

“I get really sick of the domination of the Greeks. If you don’t belong to one of their organizations, you feel pretty insignificant.”

“There’s nothing to do off campus. You want to get out sometimes, but where do you go?”

“The general education lecture courses are nothing more than nap-time for me.”
